Along with the benefits mentioned above, beets contain folate (vitamin B9) which is important during pregnancy to avoid neural tube defects in a growing baby. Along with that, a study conducted on mice and rabbits in 2017 even suggests that beetroots may have a positive impact on fertility as well as an increase in reproductive hormones. Further research is needed, but this is an exciting topic to stay updated on! Beets are also hormone balancing through their rich source of cortisol reducing Vitamin C, serotonin promoting betaine, and thyroxine producing manganese. Vitamin C also helps you absorb iron, a mineral women are more likely to be deficient in due to menstruation. Studies are showing there may be a relationship between manganese and calcium consumption in reducing symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, but further research is needed.
