Intro to Adaptogens

At Eat by Alex, we use adaptogens in our powder blends to provide a super boost of health. But you may be wondering... what exactly are adaptogens and why are they so special? Let's take a look at them today.

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are a class of plants, herbs, and fungi that have been used for centuries in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. They are characterised by their ability to help the body adapt and respond to various stressors, including physical, mental, and environmental stress as well as anxiety and fatigue. Unlike conventional drugs that target specific symptoms or conditions, adaptogens work holistically to restore balance and promote overall well-being.

Examples of Adaptogens

  1. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) - Ashwagandha is one of the most widely used adaptogens, and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Ashwagandha helps reduce stress, and may improve energy levels, reduce inflammation, boost cognitive function, and improve sleep.
  2. Reishi Mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum) - Reishi boosts the immune system and may reduce symptoms of depression.
  3. Turmeric - may reduce symptoms of depression and is anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant.

Health Benefits of Adaptogens:

  • Stress Reduction - adaptogens help regulate the body's stress response system, they promote a sense of calmness, improve mood, and enhance resilience to stressors.

  • Increased Energy and Stamina

  • Enhanced Cognitive Function - adaptogens can improve focus, mental clarity, and memory. They support brain health by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

  • Immune System Support - adaptogens have immunomodulatory effects, meaning they help regulate the immune system. They support a balanced immune response, enhance immune cell activity, and improve overall immune function.

Overall, adaptogens can have a very positive impact on your health. Further research is being done on the different specific adaptogens to better understand their impact and we are excited to learn more!

If you are taking medications, check with your healthcare provider before taking adaptogens to make sure they won’t interact. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding please check with your healthcare provider before taking adaptogens.
