Intro to Adaptogens

Intro to Adaptogens

At Eat by Alex, we use adaptogens in our powder blends. But you may be wondering... what exactly are adaptogens and why are they so special? Let's take a look at them today.

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are a class of plants, herbs, and fungi that have been used for centuries in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. They are characterised by their ability to help the body adapt and respond to various stressors. Unlike conventional drugs that target specific symptoms or conditions, adaptogens work holistically to restore balance and promote overall well-being.

Examples of Adaptogens

  1. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) - Ashwagandha is one of the most widely used adaptogens, and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Ashwagandha is known for its relaxing and balancing qualities.
  2. Reishi Mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum) - Reishi is a popular fungus used in Eastern medicine, where it is believed to support the immune system.
  3. Turmeric - Turmeric is used for its antioxidant effects, among other things.

Further research is being done on the different specific adaptogens to better understand their impact and we are excited to learn more!

If you are taking medications, check with your healthcare provider before taking adaptogens to make sure they won’t interact. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding please check with your healthcare provider before taking adaptogens.
